Overview

CVE-2026-1731 is a critical command injection vulnerability in BeyondTrust Remote Support and older Privileged Remote Access versions that allows attackers to execute arbitrary system commands without authentication by sending specially crafted requests to the vulnerable service. After the public proof-of-concept (PoC) release, attackers began exploiting exposed systems within 24 hours. The vulnerability stems from improper input sanitization in request handling, where unsanitized user input is passed directly to system-level command execution, enabling full system compromise and lateral movement across enterprise networks.

Exploitation Method

Attack Scenario

  1. Reconnaissance: Attacker scans internet-accessible systems for exposed BeyondTrust instances
  2. Version Identification: Identifies vulnerable versions (≤25.3.1 Remote Support or ≤24.3.4 PRA)
  3. Exploitation: Sends crafted HTTP request exploiting command injection vulnerability
  4. Code Execution: Arbitrary system commands execute with service account privileges
  5. Initial Access: Deploys:
    • Web shells for persistent access
    • Reverse shells for interactive control
    • Persistence mechanisms for long-term foothold
  6. Lateral Movement: Uses compromised system to move within enterprise network

Mitigation Strategies

Immediate Actions (CRITICAL)

  • Search Logs: Review access logs for suspicious command injection attempts or unusual HTTP requests
  • Check for Compromise: Look for web shells, reverse shells, or persistence mechanisms on compromised systems

Network Segmentation & Access Control
