Overview

A July 2026 Broadcom advisory described critical vulnerabilities affecting VMware ESX, vCenter, Workstation, and Fusion, including multiple high-severity weaknesses.

The most severe findings include vCenter authentication bypass and directory traversal leading to remote code execution, plus a VMXNET3 out-of-bounds write in ESX characterized as a virtual machine escape.

Exploitation Status

  • Broadcom reported no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation at advisory publication time.
  • Despite that status, CVSS 9.8/9.3 scores and the VM-escape nature of CVE-2026-47876 make these vulnerabilities urgent patch priorities.

Attack Scenario

vCenter Network Attacker Chain (CVE-2026-59309 + CVE-2026-59310)

  1. Attacker with network reachability targets an unpatched vCenter instance.
  2. CVE-2026-59309 is exploited to bypass authentication controls.
  3. CVE-2026-59310 is then used for directory traversal and code execution in vCenter context.
  4. With management-plane compromise, attacker can manipulate ESXi hosts, VM workloads, and virtual network configuration.

VM Escape via VMXNET3 (CVE-2026-47876)

  1. Attacker gains local administrative privileges inside a guest VM using VMXNET3.
  2. Out-of-bounds write vulnerability is triggered to execute code on the underlying ESX host.
  3. VM boundary is bypassed, enabling hypervisor-level compromise and cross-VM risk.

ESX Out-of-Bounds Read and Logging Weaknesses (CVE-2026-41703, CVE-2026-41709)

  1. User with VM deployment privileges may trigger CVE-2026-41703 for information disclosure or service instability.
  2. Malicious privileged users may abuse CVE-2026-41709 to reduce traceability of suspicious actions.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediate Patching

  • Upgrade affected products to the fixed versions published by Broadcom.
  • Prioritize internet-reachable or business-critical management systems first.

Reduce vCenter Exposure

  • Restrict vCenter management access to trusted administrative networks and VPN paths.
  • Avoid direct internet exposure and enforce strict firewall segmentation.

Limit VMXNET3 Risk Where Feasible

  • For high-risk workloads, evaluate temporary NIC-type alternatives if operationally acceptable until patch completion.
  • Enforce strict control of local administrative privileges in guest VMs.

Logging and Monitoring

  • Validate ESX/vCenter logging after updates and ensure critical operations are captured.
  • Monitor for unusual access to management interfaces and anomalous host/VM operations.

General VMware Hardening

  • Apply VMware/Broadcom hardening guidance for secure configuration and least privilege.
  • Segment management networks and enforce continuous vulnerability management for virtualization stacks.
